Hair Extension techniques Explained and Prices

Micro Ring hair extensions

The Micro Ring technique, which combines soft or fine strands of natural hair with the extension hair. As there is no glue, sewing or braids involved there is no damage to your own hair. This technique can be done on all types of hair. The micro ring is a metal ring with a silicone lining to give a better grip and cushion your own hair.

Micro Ring extensions can last upto three months before needing to be removed.

Shedding and extension loss is common as the weeks progress as your own hair sheds and there is less hair for the ring to stay attached to and as the bond softens due to shampooing and prolonged time wet it is easier for the extension hair to shed from the rings.

Whats the difference between between pre-bonded and micro ring ?

Micro ring extensions are easier to maintain, they are quicker to apply and they do not involve adding any heat to the hair or glue, but they are more visible on people with thinner hair and can cause more scalp irritation than pre-bonded and you can loose extensions quicker than pre-bonded even more so if aftercare is not followed but if you do having maintenance can quickly sort them out.

Pre-bonded are more natural looking(especially micro bonds)the bonds are easier to hide and the bonds are more comfortable on the scalp and are better if you have very short hair, they require a little more care and attention especially when using heat and use the proper extension care as normal shampoos with break down the glue bonds quicker.

Hair Extension Aftercare Advice (Important please read

Failure to comply with aftercare will result in matting, hair extensions falling out, dis coloration, damage to own hair and a waste of your time and money getting them in the first place.

Let me first address the myth the extensions last for 3 months before coming out, this is not true they last upto 3 months and during the 3 months as your own hair sheds the bonds holding the extension will inevitably grow weaker causing the extension to fall out(even more so if your hair is weakened or damaged). Other factors are lack of aftercare and over brushing, micro rings more so than pre-bonded.

Also the that hair extensions damage your hair, as long as hair extensions are applied correctly and advice and aftercare is followed correctly hair extensions will not damaged your hair. The only person who can damage your hair is you by not following aftercare advice and mistreating extensions by attempting to apply or remove them yourself.

Treat your extensions with the same respect as you would with you own natural hair. Superior aftercare and regular maintenance will keep your hair feeling and looking great for longer.

The first thing that you may notice is that immediately after the installation of the extensions, and for the next few days to a week your scalp may feel tender and slightly irritated. This is normal and will go away by the end of the week at the most. Rest assured that this is not a sign of a problem but just because of the added weight of the hair and feel of the bonds.Irritation is common as your scalp is not used to having a foreign object laying against the scalp and as the bonds soften they will feel like small tufts of hair.

After you have had extensions put in do not wash your hair for at least 2 days, use a dry shampoo such as "Batiste" on any oily root areas. This allows the bonds to fully harden. The longer you wait, the better it is for the longevity of the bonds.

Tie your hair back in a loose ponytail or plait using a soft scrunchie for bed.  Never wear your extensions for longer than 3 months. In the 3 months of wearing your extensions your hair will have grown by approx 1.5 inches, the roots of your hair often start to tangle together if you have not separated the bonds correctly and therefore it is not healthy for the hair if left.

Please Note:- Lighter Shades have a bleach content therefore will not last as long in life span as non bleached hair. The lighter shades will need extra care and less heat application to increase the lifespan.

How do i take care of my extensions ?

Washing

Your extension hair should only be washed 2 times per week. For the days in-between when your own hair gets oily You can tie back your extensions and just wash the top section of your own hair and fringe but be careful not to wet extensions and dry straight after.

Before washing it is advised to detangle your extension hair with a wide tooth comb and separate the bonds.

It is essential you only use shampoo and conditioner that is designed for hair extension use. If you decide not to use a mild shampoo that does not contain oils or citrus(oils will cause the bonds to slip and citrus will dry out the hair). But understand you will not get the same longevity if you do not use the proper extension aftercare products.

When washing your hair, do not tip your head over the bath as this could cause tangling - always wash with your head upright – in the shower is ideal.  Smooth the shampoo down the extension hair – do not rub vigorously!  Only condition from the mid lengths to the end of the hair.
Make sure you wash well in-between the micro rings to keep your scalp free from bacteria.

When rinsing, rinse throughly making sure all residue is rinsed out.(shampoo or conditioner left in the scalp will cause residue build up and excessive itching.

You can pick the top section of your own hair up and apply conditioner to this section.  Pat and squeeze hair gently when washed – do not rub.
Use a good conditioning treatment at least once a week on mid lengths and ends.

With your new hair extensions you won't need to wash your hair as much as you would normally. You shouldn't need to wash your hair any more than three times a week as any more than this can put too much stress on the extensions due to excessive heat styling etc.

It is important to only use a shampoo and conditioner recommended for hair extensions. This is because many of the standard high street brands contain high volumes of sodium chloride (salt) which will dry out your hair and silicone based ingredients which can cause the bonds to weaken and break down. Loose bonds will cause the extensions to fall out - so either way it is a lose - lose situation.

Drying

Before detangling we advise you to use a leave in conditioning/heat protection spray spray. Follow by detangling with a wide tooth comb while holding the bonds, making sure you avoid the bonds.

Make sure all bonds are dried completely straight after washing on a low heat (on cool for bonded extensions at the roots).  Be very careful when brushing the hair when wet, make sure you support the extensions hair by holding the bonds.

For a sleek finish, section your hair off and blow dry using a round brush with soft bristles. Be very careful that you do not snag the bonds.  Finish by using a good quality straightening iron.

Do not curl hair with hair straighteners as this will pull on the extensions, use a wand or tongs.

Heated Rollers, Straightening Irons, crimpers and tongs can all be used on the extension hair although it is advisable to use a Heat Protection Spray to protect the both your hair and the extension hair.  Serums, gels, hairspray, etc may all be used but avoid the bonded areas as this may cause slippage and disintegration of the bonds.

Brushing

Remember your extensions are attached to your own natural hair, pulling too hard or mistreating your extensions can result in your own hair being pulled out.
The only brush you should use near to your extension bonds is an extension brush – this brush has soft bristles and a cushioned bristle base, meaning the brush gently glides over the bonds.

When brushing the extensions always hold the bonds, making sure no additional stress is put on the hair.

When brushing your hair, make sure you are using a hair extension brush as this is specifically designed for your extensions. Other brushes with balls on the ends can rip and break the hair. You need to keep your extensions tangle free by brushing your hair up to two times a day and separating the bonds, but avoid over-brushing as this can cause unnecessary shedding.

Day to Day Activities

Remember to separate your bonds everyday to prevent matting .

If you use a sun bed it is advisable to wrap the hair in a towel first. Sun beds can dry out the hair and melt the bonds.

If you work out regularly or have regular use of a sauna or steam room make sure the bonds are completely dried as soon as possible after your session - leaving the bonds in a constant damp environment could cause them to deteriorate.

We do not advise getting Hair Extensions if you are pregnant or for one year after having a baby as hormonal hair loss during and after pregnancy can be accelerated by wearing hair extensions.

We do not recommend that you swim with your extensions, however if you do, we advise you take the following precautions

Place long extension hairstyle into a braid, using a covered band.

Avoid getting extension hair wet when swimming. Keep your head above the water, do not swim under water and no diving.

The chlorine in pools and salt in the sea combined with heat can cause the extension hair to discolour and matt. Chlorine, pool chemicals and salt will cause the keratin bonds to break down and disintegrate which will result in the loss of the extension hair if the prebonded or micro loop system is used as they both contain a bond or micro bond.

If the extensions do get wet during this activity dry extension hair immediately after swimming ensuring first you rinse the hair in fresh water:

Do not brush extension hair when wet, dry immediately. Ensure that Extension hair is tangle free after swimming;

Do not sleep with wet hair extensions; ensure they are dry before you head for bed.

Hair extensions do require a certain amount of maintenance but once you've got the hang of how to wash, dry and style your hair your extensions will look great for even longer; it really is worth it!

So there you go ladies, next time you are thinking of cutting costs and time on aftercare the simple answer is DON'T.
